April 8-12 Burchfield Branch Lock 17 Alabama

I have been off the grid for five days and it has been nice. After having Big Mona updated we left Georgia and headed for Alabama. Where we were headed was between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. We passed Talladaga Race track. It is huge!  Then through Birmingham and on to US 20/59. It was a very long winding road to get to this Army Corps of Engineer park, but we have no regrets.

The park consists of maybe 20 sites, some on the water and others in a ‘holler’ nicely shaded with a spring fed creek running through it. Lake Holt is built between two locks and during the summer becomes quite busy. We enjoyed evening campfires thanks to a neighboring couple who gave us lots of wood from their home 30 minutes away. One night we had severe storm warning and possible hail. We had lightening and a lot of rain but in our little holler protected us. The next day our little creek became a babbling brook with a mini waterfall.

Another couple we met were from Virginia and had a 2014 Tiffin they recently purchased. They had electric bikes and even let Dennis try it. I was to afraid to embarrass myself. This campground was all uphill from the lake and Dennis found it a lot easier to cycle with that bike. They also had a blow up canoe which interested me. We shared insights and gadgets and had a nice visit with them.

We left with a view at the glassy lake and quiet campground. As soon as we got up to the top of the dam Dennis’s phone and watch started dinging. We saw several stops where the local coal miners were on strike and picketing. Sad to see how many workers in this local area are dependent on the mines. Now on to Mississippi Cousins and New Orleans.
