May 6, Historic Georgetown TX

Today we toured through Georgetown, TX.  This town is close to where we camped and thought it would be a nice walking visit. We stopped at the visitors center where Pamela kindly gave us some of the low down. Not much real history to see but the area was part of the Chisholm Trail as cattle were prominent here. The railroad came and is still here but it traveled from another town to the Snyder Brothers ranch and then back to the main line. I guess money talks.

Their little museum was simple. It use to be the town bank. I loved the architecture. Much of the town square radiates from the county court house. It was rebuilt because the first one’s foundation sunk and I believe caught on fire. It had the court house in front, the fire department in the back and the jail in the basement.

We walked around the square area and found a farmers market with I think maybe 8 vendors in a parking lot (maybe Saturdays are better attended). Otherwise the ‘historic’ buildings were antiques, crafts, clothing and gift shops and a lot of wine and beer, bars and restaurants.

We ate lunch at Gumbo’s which had a New Orleans cuisine. Dennis loved his red beans and rice, jambalaya and blackened shrimp. The prices were reasonable,  the menu had beignets as a dessert but unfortunately no more. The cook they use to have it was her speciality. We just had the chicory coffee. Nice little walk. Lots of sculpture art.

Oh, yes, and this town is known for their poppy 🌺 flowers. The color red and flower sculptures we’re everywhere. Apparently a prominent man from town had fought in France in WWI and brought back poppy seeds. He planted them. His ground were covered with them and it became the town’s flower. 🌺🌺🌺

After exploring the town we headed out to the local San Gabriel river reservoir built by the Army Core of Engineers. Very impressive. This was a Thursday afternoon and there were many young people sunning and swimming.

I wonder what adventure we will find tomorrow in Austin?
