June 9 open train to Silverton

Oh, my. I have written this blog twice before and it did not save. It must have been due to poor internet. I’m so disappointed. I hope I can remember everything.

We left in the morning for Durango. We parked and grabbed scrumptious bagels from a local shop. Boarding the train we were surprised to see our bench faced out the side of the car. As we began to move we were seated, but as the scenery became more of nature we stood. We probably spent most of the 2.5 hours one way standing.
Wet followed the river’s edge through the cantons winding up to Silverton. We spoke with two families; one from Arkansas with Air Force connections and the other a family that had traveled quite a bit nationally and internationally.
Reaching Silverton we walked the streets of this old mining town. Mostly restaurants and souvenir shops. We ate at a smaller business called the Pickle Barrel. Due to COVID the owner lost a lot of workers. It was the owner, his son and wife and an older woman. The service was great and so was the food. Afterwards we walked the town and an old stagecoach passed by. I tried to follow and get a picture, but it kept turning the corners and I missed it.
Back on the train traveling back to town we were able to view the other side of the pass. Again the views were spectacular. We really enjoyed our day.
