Pikes Peak and more
Today started with a trip to Quest for a blood draw. Then we found a local place to have breakfast in Canon City, Mugs. Great breakfast, definitely another favorite of the locals.
We returned to the RV for Dennis to take care of some business. Just before noon he was done and we took off to Colorado Springs to see the Garden of the Gods again. It has been 8 years since we were here. When there I was a little disappointed. There were so many cars and people. Just trying to take pictures from the car the bushes and trees were in the way.
We left and decided to try Pikes Peak. The last time we did this we went up in the Clog Train (a special train that literally goes up the mountain almost vertically) and came down riding bikes with a tour group, 14,115 feet above sea level. This thing me we drove up. The park was getting ready for Sunday’s “Race to the Clouds”. Stock cars are timed as they race to the top. The fastest recorded was around 8 minutes up switch backs and high elevation. We chose not to race up.
At 12000 feet you had to park and use a shuttle bus because the new visitor’s center opened yesterday but not the parking lots. Dennis did not have a jacket and chose not to take the shuttle, so up I went alone. Taking a school bus up the last 2000 ft of elevation was a little interesting. At the top everything looked different. What had been a huge flat top with loads of parking was lots of rock, newly constructed walk ways, and a new modern building. Did I mention the temp was below 60 degrees without the sun shining on you? Really it was quite nice and it was neat to see the new Cog Train and track.
I returned via shuttle to Dennis and we proceeded down. We reminisced the whole way. I can’t believe we rode this on bikes. It ended up another good day of touring. Oh, and I didn’t even mention there was a Santa’s North Pole amusement park. Dennis did not want to stop even though it was a free day because they were celebrating 65 years in existence. Oh, well. Home we headed. Tomorrow is a travel day.
