Royal Gorge and Canon City
Today we ventured out to see the Royal Gorge. Dennis had been there when he was young. We were not willing to pay $30 each to walk across or more to use the gondolas. From the overlook we could see everything. We even heard the train whistle as it traveled underneath in the canyon. So now we’ve seen the bridge from the bottom and the top. After getting postcards and magnet we headed to Canon City.
Walking the streets of historic Canon City I enjoyed seeing the original buildings from early 1900s. Learned a little about the history. It had been a busy trading location, then the gold rush. However, the Civil War left the town abandoned. After the war was over, evidentially retired soldiers from both sides came here and the town was brought back to life.
I had read about a local pizza place earlier, Pizza Madness. We decided to try it out. Great pizza and wow did this place get busy. Definitely a mixed age local hang out. Inside atmosphere artsy from wall painting to stained glass
To walk off the pizza we went to the local quilt shop and a soap and lotion store. All in all a nice morning and afternoon.
On the drive in I noticed three different jails. Actually penitentiary buildings. Turns out Fremont County is home of 7 state prisons. They house over 5000 prisoners. Yikes. Interesting trivia. I have more in the photos above.
