Comanche Crossing Museum

What a nice museum today featuring the small town of Strasburg, Co. the crossing is where the pacific railroad and the Atlantic railroad met. Stopped at the Missouri River canyon and eventually connected with a bridge and then in Strasburg the two were connected. The actual site of the connection is on private property that we can not go to, however, the train depot and other buildings were moved to this museum location for all to enjoy.

The tour began with a bank teller’s booth and all the furniture for that. Then a soda fountain taken from the old Strasburg building.

Our tour guide was a retired kindergarten teacher. With two old school houses dating to 1901 era we shared many memories of our teachings. This museum offers week long camps in July for children get to experience what life was like in the early 1900s. They dress up in period clothes and make several things children would have done in the past.

I was interested that the train station was also a home for the station master. It had three bedrooms, a parlor, and a large kitchen. It also housed the communication tools of phone and telegraph. The Barn interested Dennis with the farming equipment his Aunt and Uncle use to have. The farm house was a simple two room house with a summer porch.

There were assorted other equipment in other buildings including dishes, kitchen tools, pharmacy and general store items, cars and clothing and so much more. We were allowed to roam casually through everything while our guide remained nearby to interject bits of information or to answer questions.

This museum is run by volunteers. Our host said that there are usually three volunteers a day and their hours are only 1to 4. We really enjoyed ourselves.
