The Badlands of South Dakota
Today’s adventure was discovering the sandstone landscape of the Badlands National park. We are camped right outside the park at Badlands Motel and campground, Interior SD. Today’s temperature went up to 100 degrees. It is after 8:30 and the sun has yet to set and the temperature hasn’t gone down much either. I started a fire just for ambiance. 🤷🏼♀️
We learned a lot about these rock formations (as you can see in pics). I was surprised that what looks like would be a crumbly surface was actually a hardened clay covering a sandstone surface. The history is that this was once the bottom of an sea, then there were jungles as the sea dried up and finally volcanos pushed the landscape up and deposited ash covering the soil.
We ate lunch at an unusual place called Wall’s Drugs. The history behind the place was from the 1930s a couple and their small infant son wanted to have their own store. With no business for five years to speak of in a small town off the highway, the came up with the idea to encourage travelers to stop by offering free ice cold water. Long story short, it worked. Today one of the grand children still oversee it, but it has become quite the emporium withe different shops, art work, picture taking back drops and even an action moving dinosaur. Quite a stop if you are ever in the town of Wall, SD.
