The Black Hills NF & Hill City
We set up camp in Custer, South Dakota at Big Pine Campground. What a nice view of a grassy meadow.
Today we actually went to Rapid City for some chores, but on our way back we stopped at an Interpretive overlook and learned that it was a significant geologic boundary called the Great Unconformity and the Stratobowl Fault. Separating Precambrian and Paleozoic rock formations. Scientifically I thought it interesting.
Next stop was at Hill City to see their train museum. We made connections to what we learned about trains in Denver. It was an interesting museum with many artifacts and an 85 ft time line of historical train events. After that we went into the gift shop and found we could ride on a 1880 train up to Keystone City (named for the highest producing gold mine of the past). So we did! On the way back down to Hill City we saw several deer, even a fawn and a very fat prairie dog (at least I think that is what it was)
We ended the night back at camp with dinner, a camp fire, a rain storm and the Tampa Bay Lightning winning the Stanley Cup! What a great way to end the night
