The Gordon Stockade
After a poor nights sleep due to cat and a rain storm, we tried to get into the Wind Cave National Park. Unfortunately we were too late and the crowds of people and families were too great. We did see all the prairie dogs as we entered. They popped up and down out of their colony of holes watching all the cars drive by.
Next we stopped at a small stockade outside of Custer. This was the location of the Gordon Stockade built for just seven cabins inside. There were tree timber’s reaching over ten feet side by side as the perimeter. The original builders illegally entered the Sioux territory and against the Laramie Treaty. All this because of greed for gold. Turns out their panning did not “pan” out. It was interesting reading all the history behind thi gold rush.
We were also fascinated with the bike repair station located next to the exhibit. The Mickelson bike trail travels through Custer and has been built off the highway for several miles. There is even a fee to ride on it. Though not paved it is a solid pebble surface.
