Kentucky River boat

Today we re-traveled the Bourdon/historic boat tour. We wanted Dennis’s sister to experience the river. This river is totally 250 miles and feeds into to the Ohio river. Our section is dammed between lock 4 and 5. History talk included everything from original founding by Captain Wilkerson ( I believe) and the starting of Kentucky Bourbon as well as Daniel Boone’ burial spot.

The most famous distillery is Buffalo Trace named for what originally was an island in the middle of the river where Buffalo use to cross. The island is now 20 or more feet below the water due to the locks that were built in the 1800s so that barges could travel back up the river after delivering their goods: limestone, sand, coal, wood, and of course bourbon. The historic town includes past celebraties of several politicians and  known statesmen. Johnny Depp’s Mother was the first female school board superintendent and his dad was the Town Manager.

New to us was the knowledge of flooding that occurs each spring. Even this year alone the water rose over 30 feet. We were told this year was only the 9th highest on record. There were markers on the trees of the higher levels. The limestone quarry on the river was closed years ago because flooding reached so high the caves used were flooded. Wow!

We ended out evening with dinner at Greenwood distillery. No we did not drink any bourbon, but had a nice dinner.
