Mammoth Cave
Today was our tour of Mammoth cave. We took the modified tour for those needing an easier travel. It was a VERY short length walk in the cavern, but our ranger , Dave, was well versed in history and geology. He had explored these caverns for 20 years as an archeologist. I wish I had videoed his dialogue.
The cave did not offer the sights we had seen in Carlsbad. It was basically limestone and seeping gypsum. No dripping water here so no stalagmites or stalactites. The “snowballs and gypsum flowers were cool. Oh yes and the only upside down well. You can see it in the cave picture with a pipe in it. Water was transported from the aquifer above down to what was the cafeteria area in the cave. Cool 😎!
For more history, like we heard from our ranger guide, go to the Smithonian Magazine article about slave guides of Mammoth cave.
