Rebecca Ruth Candy
If you like bourbon ball candy, this is where it originated. Ruth’s Candy factory. There are other stores, but this is the only place it is made. The company was started by two women before the Great Depression. It lasted through that, WWII rationing and two fires. Ruth Booe invented the bourbon ball and the Kentucky Cornel Mint.
The factory is really quite small and yet they make and package over 3 million bourbon balls a year and over 5 million other candies. Ruth worked there well into her 80s and today it is run by her grandson. We were not allowed to photograph inside the factory but I was able to in their little museum.
The local bourbon distilleries send over their bourbon and the factory makes special request candy to sell at the distillery. Yes Dennis got some with Makers Mark and Buffalo Trace bourbon and the original.
We decided to eat lunch in Frankfort and after sending post cards in the mail Dona found a small business downtown to go to: Kentucky Coffeetree Cafe. It was a small shop indeed connected to the shops on either side. We had sandwiches and headed back to Mona.
After a short respite we traveled back to the Ark Encounter for our second night of gospel music. Not disappointed at all. From a family group to two sisters (19 and 20 years old) to The Talleys (mom and dad came out of retirement for this concert). We had never heard of any of them before but definitely enjoyed the music.
Dinner was at Frishes Big Boy because Dennis said it was a Heasty tradition to eat there. So I took his picture of one Big Boy next to another. 🤪
