Nov. 2-5 Key West
What a week we have had with Yankee Tours in Key West. Arriving early we went to dinner with a small group to Roostca. A pizza/Italian restaurant.
Monday afternoon it all began with root-beer floats. Then in the evening the entire group we to Mallory Square for authentic Cuban dinner at el Mesan de Pepe. The food was excellent. Next we waited for a beautiful sunset and watched all the sail boats and party boats go by.
Tuesday we had a touring trolley pick us up at the campground and take us on an extensive historical tour of Key West. (Trivia: this key was once 1 by 2 miles in size, but the military dredged and made it 3by 4 miles before realizing they were damaging the coral reef just off the shore line.) we had some free time and visited the Hemingway house originally built by Ada Tift who became wealthy from salvaging goods from ship that ran aground on the shallows and reefs. We also visited the light house which was moved after a fire, then built closer to the water and raised 25 feet so that it’s beacon light could be seen off shore. We also ate lunch at a little cafe called Moondog. Dennis had a seafood pizza and I had a blackened sword fish sandwich. SOoo good!
Wednesday was another free day to explore. We went to Truman’s Little White House. He and several Presidents used the place for meetings and conferences. Then we went through a Shipwreck museum. There was a delightful tee reenactor who helped tell the story of the Wreckers of Key West. Around 1862 this little key boasted the largest per capita income in the US because of money made salvaging. Other than that we ate lunch at another little cafe, then looked through the many tourist shops and wearily went back to camp.
Thursday was our first sailing day. We sailed out to the National Wildlife area and kayaked amongst the red mangroves (others snorkeled). A good box dinner and a not so spectacular sunset due to clouds.
Friday was the big WOW factor day. We took a water ferry out to a private island to eat breakfast at the ritzy Sun Set resort. White linen tablecloths and a menu without prices on it. What a treat. To end this spectacular day and week we went out on another boat to have metal drum music, wonderful food and drinks and then the most awesome sunset.
We have had a really enjoyable time making new friendship and seeing what Key West is like.
